Una abuela española que era considerada la bloguera más anciana del mundo _ llegando a ser una sensación por sus comentarios de la actualidad noticiosa _ falleció a los 97 años.

María Amelia López murió el 20 de mayo en su casa de Muxia, en la región noroocidental de Galicia, según su blog amis95.blogspot.com. No fue anunciada la causa del fallecimiento.

López comenzó a bloguear en 2006 después que su nieto _ "que es muy tacaño", escribió _ creó la página de internet como regalo para su cumpleaños 95.

Su blog atrajo una gran audiencia, con más de 1,7 millones de visitantes, al compartir López sus ideas desde la vida en España bajo la dictadura del general Francisco Franco a la invasión estadounidense en Irak, que criticó.

López dijo que el descubrimiento de la internet y la posibilidad de comunicarse con gente de todo el mundo cambiaron su vida y recomendó a las personas de avanzada edad que entraran en la web.

"Me quitaron 20 años de mi vida", escribió López. "Mis blogueros son la alegría de mi vida. No sabía que había tanta bondad en el mundo".

La notoriedad de López le valió incluso un encuentro el año pasado con el presidente del gobierno español José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, a quien respaldó con entusiasmo.

"Estuvo encantador", escribió López. "Me hubiese gustado hablar más con él, pero estaba tan nerviosa que perdí la palabra".

Being nice is cool again

IN the hit comedy “I Love You, Man,” Paul Rudd plays Peter, a sunflower of a guy: cheerful, welcoming and reassuring, if a little squeamish. Peter blushes over references to pubic hair, winces at flatulence and refuses to kiss and tell, even when the girls do.

Mr. Rudd has made a career of playing soft-spoken nice guys, and in another era that persona might have relegated him to a second tier of celebrity status, along with the likes of Donny Osmond and Pat Sajak. But today he is a leading man, even a matinee hunk, who has appeared in a string of Judd Apatow romantic comedies like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up,” as well as the current “I Love You, Man,” which has taken in just over $70 million at the domestic box office as of May 22.

Or what about Kris Allen, the polite and aw-shucks singer from small-town Arkansas, who has been called a latter-day Pat Boone, and who on Tuesday was voted by the public, casting almost 100 million ballots, a record, as its latest American Idol.

That amiable guys and uncomplicated sweethearts could be today’s pop heroes is one sign of an outbreak of niceness across the cultural landscape — an attitude bubbling up in commercials, movies and even, to a degree, the normally not-nice blogosphere.

“We are now in an age of nice,” said Eric G. Wilson, an English professor at Wake Forest University, who, as the author of “Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy,” qualifies as a professional curmudgeon. But even Mr. Wilson sees no end of smiley faces. He cites as avatars of a new niceness the Obama administration, which has been criticized for being too friendly to some repressive world leaders; advocates of political correctness who still hold sway in many public forums; and the director-writer-producer Mr. Apatow, whose era-defining comedies feature “nice guys who finish first — a great hope for non-threatening puerile males,” Mr. Wilson said.

“There’s more spark to nice — it is really in,” said Graceann Bennett, the director of strategic planning at the Chicago office of the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather. She said clients are shying away from the arch and sardonic campaigns that were in vogue when the economy was flush. Ogilvy recently pitched an ad for Truvia, a new sweetener, showing two mounds of white powder meant to suggest female breasts, one more perfectly shaped than the other. The proposed tagline: “The difference between real ones and fake ones is obvious.”

The agency wanted to make the point that Truvia is derived from stevia leaves, a South American herb, not from a laboratory. But executives at Truvia’s manufacturer, Cargill, thought the ad was mean to the competition and to women with breast implants. They rejected it.

“I’m in marketing meetings with clients all the time,” Ms. Bennett said, “and they’re always coming back with, ‘I don’t want mean.’ ”

Other brands seek to be known for putting on a happy face rather than having an attitude. Pepsi labored for decades to position itself as the younger, sexier alternative to Coca-Cola, but last fall it unveiled a logo that has been widely interpreted as a stylized smiley face (some thought it mimicked the logo for the Obama campaign, which arguably makes the same point in a different way).

Volkswagen, too, shifted away from a series of sardonic commercials featuring an acerbic German narrator; the current campaign stars Max, a cute talking 1964 Beetle, and his talking Microbus friend.

The black bug is so innocent it blushes when Heidi Klum makes a suggestive remark.

And then there are Internet companies that embrace positivity. On Twitter, every user who uploads a photograph from that latest trip to Cancún is greeted with a pop-up message that chirps, “That’s a nice picture!” Skype, the Internet telephone service, greets users with cutesy cloud motifs and bubble-letter graphics, as if the entire brand image was lifted out of a 13-year-old girl’s bedroom.

Niceness in the culture spikes when the real world is full of trouble, theorized Catherine Ryan Hyde, the author of “Pay It Forward,” the 1999 novel that gave a marketable name to the idea of doing good deeds for strangers with the expectation that they would then do the same for others. (The book inspired a 2000 movie starring Kevin Spacey and a charitable foundation, run by Ms. Hyde.)

When Ms. Hyde’s book was published, during the gilded dot-com era, many people responded to its overweening earnestness with a collective groan, she said. But in the months after 9/11, earnestness and altruism were in fashion, and Ms. Hyde saw a surge in interest in her foundation, as well as a proliferation of other like-minded grass-roots groups.

The same thing happened again after the financial crisis escalated last fall, she said. “When do you ever see people making sweeping changes when everything is going fine? They don’t. They change when the roof caves in.”

Yes, there is no shortage today of brands and famous people who are sticking with sarcasm as their public image. A few recent campaigns, including those for Miller High Life and JetBlue, are cutting against the grain and trying mocking ads, which some analysts believe will tap into people’s frustrations over the economy. And for every star like Paul Rudd and Kris Allen who kill audiences with kindness, there is an adder-tongued Simon Cowell or Bill O’Reilly.

But consider that the snarly blog world has made room for some new make-nice citizens. While sites devoted to politics, celebrities and the media are rife with invective, an expanding parallel universe of blogs catering to young women and mothers unfailingly offer encouragement and support.

OperationNice.com links to news articles about good deeds and asks bloggers to take an oath of niceness. The blog was created 10 months ago by Melissa Morris Ivone, a 28-year-old graphic designer in Cinnaminson, N.J., who was inspired after a stranger held the door for her in an elevator. She wanted to create an oasis of good vibes online.

“Blogs, message boards and comments sections are just settings for people to verbalize their (usually negative) opinions,” Ms. Ivone wrote in an e-mail message. “Personally, I wanted a little corner that was free of all that.”

So far, more than 1,100 readers, many of them fellow bloggers, have taken her oath of niceness, allowing them to post an Operation Nice seal of approval on their blogs and Facebook pages.

Maybe that Nice seal will come to rival the original bright-yellow smiley logo, which became a popular sensation in the early 1970s, a period of acute societal division over war, race and politics, when people apparently needed to force a smile. In 1971 —the year the Weather Underground bombed the Capitol and Charles Manson was convicted — more than 50 million smiley-face buttons were sold. The symbol remained a perennial on jeans patches and coffee mugs throughout the Watergate years.

“The men who marketed it imagined it as a successor to the peace sign,” according to Bruce J. Schulman, a history professor at Boston University and the author of “The Seventies: The Great Shift in American Culture, Society and Politics.” In an e-mail message, he added that smiley represented “the ‘live and let live’ message of the counterculture in a tame, de-politicized and eminently commercial form.”

Whether today’s “nice” celebrities and friendly brands reflect or influence people’s behavior in the real world is impossible to say. There is no scientific niceness index. But what can it mean that use of the word “idiot” in blog posts has declined by nearly half in the last six months, according to BlogPulse, a Nielsen service that tracks online data?

Some businesses whose stock in trade was hauteur seem to be slapping on a grin. Josh Ozersky, a restaurant editor for Citysearch.com, said he has detected a tonal shift at elite Manhattan restaurants that treated unfamous diners indifferently. “Now you see chefs working the room rather than just a few V.I.P. tables, and hostesses instructed to thank everybody on the way out, rather than just treating them like nonentities,” Mr. Ozersky said.

The Santos Party House on Lafayette Street has been embraced as the nightclub of the moment because of an open-door policy and its overt friendliness, as expressed by signs throughout that read “Thank you for partying!” and “You have a beautiful face!”

Shaving off the edges does have its rewards. Research indicates that people who might be categorized as nice tend to have lower blood pressure and lower divorce rates, said Linda Kaplan Thaler, an author of “The Power of Nice: How to Conquer the Business World With Kindness.” Doctors who take an extra few minutes to talk with patients are sued less often for malpractice.

“Companies that have the highest retention have the nicest atmospheres,” said Ms. Kaplan Thayer, who is also chief executive of the Kaplan Thaler Group, an advertising agency that employs about 175 people. “And in a situation where people are losing their jobs and you have an option of whom to hire, you’re going to hire the person who is complimenting your tie. Nice becomes a competitive edge.”

Not everyone is buying it. Professor Wilson of Wake Forest, for one, will not relinquish his disdain for the smiley face. All this undue politeness, he says, “produces ubiquitous and maybe dangerous mediocrity.”

“ ‘Have a nice day.’ ‘That’s a nice car.’ ‘Be nice.’ What do these sayings mean but let’s make everything perfectly agreeable?” he said. “Which is to say, predictable and vaguely reassuring, like easy-listening radio or greeting-card sunrises or Tom Hanks.”

Bitterness as mental illness?

You know them. I know them. And, increasingly, psychiatrists know them. People who feel they have been wronged by someone and are so bitter they can barely function other than to ruminate about their circumstances.

This behavior is so common -- and so deeply destructive -- that some psychiatrists are urging it be identified as a mental illness under the name post-traumatic embitterment disorder. The behavior was discussed before an enthusiastic audience last week at a meeting of the American Psychiatric Assn. in San Francisco.

The disorder is modeled after post-traumatic stress disorder because it too is a response to a trauma that endures. People with PTSD are left fearful and anxious. Embittered people are left seething for revenge.

"They feel the world has treated them unfairly. It's one step more complex than anger. They're angry plus helpless," says Dr. Michael Linden, a German psychiatrist who named the behavior.

Embittered people are typically good people who have worked hard at something important, such as a job, relationship or activity, Linden says. When something unexpectedly awful happens -- they don't get the promotion, their spouse files for divorce or they fail to make the Olympic team -- a profound sense of injustice overtakes them. Instead of dealing with the loss with the help of family and friends, they cannot let go of the feeling of being victimized. Almost immediately after the traumatic event, they become angry, pessimistic, aggressive, hopeless haters.


"Embitterment is a violation of basic beliefs," Linden says. "It causes a very severe emotional reaction. . . . We are always coping with negative life events. It's the reaction that varies."

There are only a handful of studies on the condition, but psychiatrists at the meeting agreed that much more research is needed on identifying and helping these people. One estimate is that 1% to 2% of the population is embittered, says Linden, who has published several studies on the condition.

"These people usually don't come to treatment because 'the world has to change, not me,' " Linden says. "They are almost treatment resistant. . . . Revenge is not a treatment."

Nevertheless, Linden suggests that people once known as loving, normal individuals who suddenly snap and kill their family and themselves may have post-traumatic embitterment syndrome. That's reason enough for researchers to study how to treat the destructive emotion of bitterness

La vitamina D no protegería contra el cáncer de próstata

Una nueva investigación realizada en Europa confirma que el riesgo de un hombre de desarrollar cáncer de próstata no tiene relación con cuánta vitamina D tiene en su sangre.

"Pese a la idea expandida de que la insuficiencia de vitamina D es un factor de riesgo importante para el cáncer prostático, esta teoría no ha sido sostenida por los resultados de la mayoría de los estudios prospectivos publicados", escribieron la doctora Francesca L. Crowe, de la University of Oxford en Gran Bretaña, y sus colegas, en American Journal of Epidemiology.

Los científicos han estado investigando si tener una cantidad escasa de vitamina D impulsa el riesgo de cáncer de próstata desde que un estudio en 1990 relacionó las tasas elevadas de la enfermedad con una menor exposición al sol, la cual genera la producción de vitamina D en el cuerpo, indicó el equipo.

No obstante, mientras los experimentos en laboratorio y con animales respaldaban esa relación, las investigaciones en hombres de Estados Unidos y los países escandinavos no lo hicieron, agregaron los expertos.

Los varones con los mayores niveles de vitamina D eran en verdad un 28 por ciento más propensos a desarrollar cáncer de próstata que aquellos con las cantidades más bajas, revelaron los investigadores.

Pero no fue una diferencia estadísticamente significativa, lo que implica que podría haber sucedido por azar.

Londres, 26 may (EFE).- Una niña británica de tres años, Layla Towsey, ha sorprendido a los médicos al despertar del coma en el que estaba sumida desde hacía cinco días cantando el "Mamma Mia!" de Abba, su melodía preferida.


La historia, que parece sacada de un guión cinematográfico, sucedió en el londinense Hospital Saint Mary's de Paddington, donde Layla recuperó la conciencia después de estar en coma aquejada de una meningitis, según informa hoy la prensa británica.


"Pude oirla cantando 'Mamma Mia!' en voz baja. No me lo podía creer", explicó su madre, Katy Towsey, de 23 años, quien no dudó en considerar "un milagro" la recuperación de su hija.


La canción del grupo sueco de pop, que cosechó un gran éxito durante la década de los setenta, era conocida por la pequeña gracias a la película basada en el musical de ABBA que protagonizó Meryl Streep y que se estrenó en el verano de 2008.


"Realmente es una de sus canciones preferidas, ella ha visto la película y le encanta", señaló su todavía incrédula progenitora.


Layla Towsey, natural del condado de Essex (Inglaterra), cayó enferma el mes pasado y sufrió un ataque al corazón después de que su madre la llevara al hospital tras detectar una especie de sarpullido en su pierna.


Los médicos diagnosticaron que la pequeña tenía meningitis B y septicemia meningocócica, y tuvieron que conectarla a un respirador después de que sufriera el infarto.


La madre de la niña subrayó que el primer doctor que trató a su hija le recomendó, tras ver el sarpullido, que no se preocupara.


Sin embargo, Towsey tuvo que insistir en que la viera un pediatra, aunque descartó que vaya a emprender acciones legales contra el hospital.


"Si no hubiera seguido mis instintos, el primer doctor le habría dado el alta", relató Katy Towsey, a quien la traumática experiencia vivida por su hija ha animado a apoyar una campaña para recaudar fondos destinados a buscar de una vacuna contra la meningitis B.


Para tal fin, la joven madre celebró hace unos días una fiesta en su jardín y recaudó 240 libras (algo más de 270 libras).

Según el estudio, el papá puede subir hasta 6,35 kilos de peso durante el embarazo de su pareja, que en promedio, tiene un aumento de 15 kilos a lo largo de la gestación.


Para obtener esta conclusión, la firma Onepoll encuestó a 5 mil hombres. De ese total, el 20 por ciento dijo que mientras su pareja estuvo gestante había tenido comidas más grandes. Y el 25 por ciento afirmó que comía más atraído por los antojos que generalmente exigía su compañera encinta. Entre esas comidas están las pizzas, los chocolates y las papas fritas.

El peso promedio aumentado por los hombres equivalía a 5 centímetros en la cintura, por eso, un 25 por ciento tuvo que comprar ropa nueva.

Además de mostrar 'solidaridad' con su pareja, otra de las razones de este aumento está sustentado en que los padres del futuro bebé pasaron más tiempo en restaurantes para aprovechar el tiempo libre que les quedaba antes de su nacimiento. Pero una vez se produjo el alumbramiento, sólo una tercera parte de los hombres aplicó una dieta para bajar de peso.

Y como se recomienda a las mujeres que consuman unas 300 calorías adicionales diarias con alimentos sanos, esto para asegurarse de que se cumplan las necesidades nutricionales del bebé, entonces las despensas de la cocina se llenaron y tentaron a los hombres a comer, afirma la investigación.

Mary Kay beauty company has conducted a “Truths About Abuse” survey which reveals that domestic violence is on the rise due to the current economic crisis.
Three out of four domestic violence shelters report an increase in battered women since September 2008 – a major turning point in the U.S. economy.
Moreover, 73 percent attribute the rise in abuse to financial issues, 61 percent blame subsequent stress, and 49 percent say job loss fuels violence.
About 44 percent of shelters in the Midwest say that even the loss of a home or vehicle is a factor in the rise of abuse.
To combat the terrible trend, Mary Kay Inc. has launched “Beauty That Counts,” a campaign through December 15, 2009, where $1 from each sale of Beauty That Counts Creme Lipstick in Pink Passion and Gingerbread goes toward helping women and children of domestic violence.
The company is donating nearly $2 million for abuse prevention and education efforts

Panamá dejó de considerar ilegal la homosexualidad en 2008, pero Burundi pasó a hacerlo por primera vez en su historia este año, indica la organización. Este informe, el tercero que elabora ILGA sobre la homofobia en el mundo, revisa la legislación que criminaliza actos sexuales consentidos y privados entre personas del mismo sexo mayores de edad.
La secretaria general de ILGA, la psicóloga mexicana Gloria Careaga, explica que la consagración de la homofobia en la legislación de esos países deja a los homosexuales "sin ninguna posibilidad de escape y sin medios para pedir ayuda".
El también secretario general de la organización, Renato Sabbadini, considera que la homofobia parte de la idea de que hombres y mujeres no deberían ser iguales sino desempeñar roles sociales incompatibles entre ellos.
El estudio, realizado por Daniel Ottosson de la Escuela Universitaria de Södertörn (Estocolmo), recuerda además que las actividades sexuales entre personas del mismo sexo nunca han sido tipificadas como delito en doce países: Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, República Centroafricana, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Costa de Marfil, República Democrática del Congo, Gabón, Madagascar, Níger y Ruanda.

En cuestiones de enfermedades, las mujeres son más resistentes que los hombres gracias al estrógeno, escribieron científicos en la edición más reciente de la revista Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS).

Investigadores de la Universidad McGill indicaron en un estudio con ratones que el estrógeno, hormona sexual femenina, al perecer inhibe una enzima llamada Caspasa-12 que a su vez está vinculada a los procesos inflamatorios.

Según los científicos, eso podría explicar que las mujeres soporten mejor las enfermedades que sus congéneres masculinos.

El equipo basó sus resultados en un experimento con roedores a los que implantó el gen humano de la Caspasa-12, y comprobó que los machos eran más propensos a las enfermedades, mientras que las toleraban mejor.

"Nos quedamos muy sorprendidos con estos resultados, y determinamos que el estrógeno producido por el sistema inmune de las ratonas bloquea la expresión del gen humano de la Caspasa-12", indicó Maya Saleh, directora del estudio.

De acuerdo con los investigadores, las mujeres pueden tener un sistema inmunológico más robusto por el papel que desempeñan en la reproducción y la crianza.

EFE , Miami (EE.UU.) | hace 8 minutos El religioso puertorriqueño Tommy Moya, que dirigía programas de televisión y de radio cristianos en Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica, renunció el domingo a su cargo de pastor general de una iglesia cristiana en Florida, tras reconocer que cometió adulterio.

La Junta de Gobierno del Centro Cristiano Restauración de Orlando, en el centro del estado, anunció hoy la dimisión del pastor en un breve comunicado, pero no suministró mayores detalles.

"Este pasado domingo Tommy Moya notificó a la congregación su renuncia voluntaria debido a su pecado de adulterio, asumiendo responsabilidad de sus acciones públicamente", indicó el mensaje.

El religioso, de 42 años, está casado con Janet Moya y es padre de dos jóvenes, según el sitio en Internet de ese centro religioso que congrega a más de 2.800 personas semanalmente.

El pastor, fundador de esa iglesia cristiana, es anfitrión de programas de televisión que se transmiten en Estados Unidos, Puerto Rico, Centro y Suramérica y en algunos países de Europa.

Sus programas de radio se escuchan en Florida, Connecticut, Costa Rica, República Dominicana y Venezuela.

This following story is so true. Music can change your mood in a hearbeat. So to read that it actually helps the heart isn't surprising to me!





If you didn't catch the white coat and the stethoscope, you might take Dr. Mike Miller for a middle-aged rocker, roaming the halls of the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

For years, Miller, a research cardiologist, has been studying the effects of happiness -- or things that make people happy -- on our hearts. He began his research with laughter, and found watching funny movies and laughing at them could actually open up blood vessels, allowing blood to circulate more freely.

Miller thought, if laughter can do that, why not music? So, he tested the effects of music on the cardiovascular system. "Turns out music may be one of the best de-stressors -- either by playing or even listening to music," said Miller.

The setup was basically the same as with the laughter study: Using high-tech imaging, Miller measured blood vessel size as people listened to music.

The results did not surprise Miller. "The inner lining of the blood vessel relaxed, opened up and produced chemicals that are protective to the heart," he said.

But when participants listened to music they didn't particularly enjoy, Miller said, "the vessels actually began to close up." Watch Dr. Gupta explain how music helps the heart »

That's exactly what tension -- or stress -- does.

Long-term stress can wreak havoc on the cardiovascular system. Over time, it can cause blood vessels to stiffen and become rigid, constricting blood flow. As people get older, arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, becomes a problem. Constricted vessels can cause blood pressure to rise and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Stress can also suppress the immune system, contribute to infertility and impotence, speed the aging process and even rewire the brain, leaving people more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.

But music can counter the effects of stress. "It gives us an overall feeling of good, well-being -- a sense of euphoria in some cases," Miller said.

A recent study out of Stanford University found elderly patients who were diagnosed with depression gained self-esteem and saw an improvement in their mood when they were visited by a music therapist.

In fact, many hospitals across the country use music therapy to help patients heal. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, uses music as part of its cardiovascular surgery healing program to "promote relaxation and reduce tension, stress and anxiety." Because music helps these patients relax, it decreases their pain, improves their moods and helps them to sleep better, especially during recovery.

Miller has not only seen these same results in some of his patients who use music therapy, but he said he also believes music can be so relaxing that it can actually keep the body young. "We would like to believe that it may slow down the aging process," he said.

But be careful what you listen to. Whether you like Beyoncé or the B-52s, Chopin or Johnny Cash, Miller found that listening repeatedly to the same tune diminished the music's effects on the body. "You just don't get that boost if you listen to the same song over and over again," he said. "You need to vary your songs, so when you hear the song fresh, it brings back the sense of joy and opens up the system."

So, the next time your boss gets on your nerves, or the kids are driving you crazy, or the car breaks down, don't start pulling out your hair. Instead, turn on the radio, grab your iPod or pop in a CD, and let the music carry you away.

Las mujeres emocionalmente inteligentes disfrutan más del sexo, según una investigación del Kings College de Londres que publica el "Journal of Sexual Medicine".

La investigación comparó más de 2,000 hermanas gemelas y constató que aquellas con una mayor inteligencia emocional (definida como la capacidad de reconocer y manejar sentimientos propios y ajenos) tenían más orgasmos y una vida sexual más satisfactoria.

Las 2,035 participantes en el estudio contestaron a amplios cuestionarios sobre su vida sexual y a preguntas destinadas a determinar clínicamente su grado de inteligencia emocional.

La conclusión fue que existe "una vinculación significativa" entre la inteligencia emocional y la frecuencia de los orgasmos durante la masturbación y la actividad sexual con otra persona.

"La inteligencia emocional parece tener una incidencia directa en el funcionamiento sexual de las mujeres, al influir en sus capacidad para comunicar sus expectativas y deseos sexuales a su pareja", explicó la psiquiatra Andrea Burri, directora de la investigación.

Esto tiene que ver también, añadió Burri, con la capacidad de cada mujer de tener fantasías durante el sexo y con su sensación de control durante el acto sexual.

Tim Spector, investigador del Kings College y coautor de la investigación, manifestó: "la inteligencia emocional es una ventaja en muchos aspectos de nuestras vidas, incluida la vida en el dormitorio. Este estudio ayudará enormemente a desarrollar terapias cognitivas y del comportamiento para mejorar la vida sexual de las mujeres".

Un tercio de las mujeres tiene dificultades o es incapaz de tener un orgasmo durante la práctica del sexo, recordaron los autores del estudio.

Paula Halle, psicoterapeuta sexual de Relate, uno de los principales servicios de ayuda familiar y sexual del Reino Unido, dijo en declaraciones a la BBC que "la inteligencia emocional es de una gran importancia a la hora de resolver problemas", incluidos lógicamente los relacionados con la vida sexual.

Muchas mujeres desean perder peso sólo para lucir mejor y no para ser más saludables, y otras se quejan de su figura aunque están perfectamente sanas, dice un estudio.



La investigación, efectuada por la Associated Press en conjunto con la iVillage, determinó que hay a veces una contradicción entre la condición física de muchas mujeres y la imagen que ellas tienen de sí mismas.

"Las prioridades están invertidas", dijo la doctora Molly Poag, directora del departamento de psiquiatría del Hospital Lennox Hill de Nueva York.

Un 60% de los estadounidenses son obesos o están excedidos de peso, halló la investigación, confirmando cifras del gobierno. Pero lo más sorprendente son las actitudes de las mujeres.

La mitad están descontentas con su peso aunque el 26% tiene una correlación peso/altura/masa aceptable. Una tercera parte de ellas están descontentas con su estado de salud.

En promedio, las mujeres se ejercitan 80 minutos por semana aunque según los expertos se necesitan dos horas y medio de ejercicio semanal para tener buena salud. Apenas el 8% ingieren las raciones mínimas de frutas y vegetales recomendadas por el gobierno.

Una cuarta parte de ellas dicen que estarían dispuestas a someterse a cirugía plástica para lucir más bellas, y la reducción del abdomen es la operación preferida aunque ella consiste sólo en la reducción de una capa de grasa superficial.

Por otra parte, el estudio halló que el 16% de las mujeres de peso normal están haciendo dieta.

Lucir delgada no necesariamente quiere decir estar saludable, advierte Samantha Kwan, socióloga de la Universidad de Houston.

"Una persona puede ser gorda y saludable al mismo tiempo si está comiendo una dieta balanceada y practica actividad física", dice Kwan. "Nuestra cultura definitivamente presiona mucho a las mujeres para que luzcan de cierta manera".

Lost of life

It was so sad to hear of the passing of fellow radio personality Erika Roman from power 95.3 in Orlando. I didn't know her personally but she sounded so full of life! I was actually working on a story when my good friend Nasta texted me the news. I swear the mood changed immediately. I was like ADM I just heard her the other day. Siento mucho por su familia. When I lost my brother in a motorcycle accident back in the 90's I was devastated always thinking about what if this or that but with time we learn to accept that God needed them! A Public Memorial Service for Erika Roman on Wed at Northland Church in Longwood will be held. Doors open @ 5:30 - service at 6:30. Que Diosito te tenga a su lado!
